Te Reo (I SPY)

Today for the Te Reo Challenge we have completed the ispy. In this activity there were a list of object we needed to write the number of things there were in the image in Maori. To help us count more accurately without counting the same one again we put shapes to remind us to not repeat it again.

Some questions that were given were...

how many KutiKuti-scissors are there?

how many Tamariki-children are there?
how many pirihimana- Police are there?

and many more

I enjoyed this activity because it helped me with my Te reo knowledge.

Ancient Olympic Games Presentation

LI: To skim and scan to find facts about the Ancient Olympics and make notes in my own words.

We used our reading time this week to find out about the Ancient Greek Olympics. Once we had made our notes and reorganised our information we collaboratively created a presentation.

I found this activity a little tricky because there was different roles for each person in my group my not everyone chose to do it.
I enjoyes this activity because I had the chance to research more about the ancient games.

Hauora and Olympians

Hauora and Olympians

Athletes at the top of their field train menally and physically because it is both the body and the mind that need to be strong to have a balance as an athlete. It is important to enjoy and celebrate the success you earn but it is equally as important to embrace the less successful times. It is learning you take from losing that makes you stronger and wiser. Having made an error you learn to remain calm in stressful situations. It is having a belief in yourself and the support of your Whanau that keep you motivated

Mindfulness Reflection *1

 What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a meditation that calms our body and our mind using a mindfulness bell. It also allows us to focus on now, and leave the past and not worry about the future. There are two zones of mindfulness which are red and green. The red zone is when you are angry, frustrated, distracted, anxious, etc. The green zone is when you are calm, clear, peaceful, engaged, etc. This also lets us remove our negativity from our minds, and control our thoughts and emotions. To have a mindful mind you will need to have your legs crossed, hands on knees, close your eyes then breath in and then breath out while your back is straight.

After doing this mindfulness session I felt more calm, and had a clear mind.

Identifying Comparisons

LI: To use our smart searching skills to expand our knowledge of Ancient Greek Mythology.

Today David shared the next reading challenge with us. It is all about the Greek gods and helps us to practise the skills we have been learning in our reading lessons with our teachers.

David created this task as part of his CARE award challenges. In this smart searching activity, we used our comprehension and research skills to learn about the difference between Athens and Sparta.

I found this activity fun and very informative because I was able to learn a lot about Greek Mythology and participate in learning activities to expand my knowledge. The fact I found most interesting was that women couldn't participate in government but could recieve physical training and own property because usually, women wouldn't be allowed any rights.

Organizing and Reserching

LI: To use our smart searching skills to expand our knowledge of Ancient Greek Mythology.

David created this task as part of his CARE award challenges. In this smart searching activity, we used our comprehension and research skills to learn about Greek Mythology vocabulary and identify Greek places on the map.

I found this activity fun because I was able to learn about the Greek vocabulary and learn about the places in Greece. The word/place I found most interesting was Plato because he was an Athenian philosopher that discovered and researched many things.

Abstact Noun Pooem

LI: To edit our writing using DRAFT

This week for writing we have been learning about abstarct poems. In writing we have two parts to our task, for the first part of the task we wrote a abstract noun poem in a group, for the second part of our learning we wrote another abstract poem in pairs. Our poem was about beauty. After writing our poemwe needed to proof read our poem. When we proof read our poems we use DRAFT. DRAFT is a acronmy that we use in writing.DRAFT stands for Delete, Rearange, Add, Fix & and Talk. In this poem we also used puncuation, metaphors, similes, the 5 senses, and an abstact noun. The 5 senses are smell, taste, hear, touch - felling & see. I found this task very intersting because learning about types of poem will help me with my writing.

Tech

LI: To explain the different parts in the Hibiscus flower

Today for tech we have been learning about the different parts of a hibiscus flower.

The first task we wrote was about our learning goals and outcome. We also wrote the name of the flower if it’s still not opened yet, what we notice when we look at the flower, and why a flower it's important.

Our second task was about learning the parts of the Hibiscus flower. To learn more about the parts of the flower we watched a video about what the parts are and our teacher explained what it is used for.

The third task was to learn how to dissect a Hibiscus flower in half. We watched another video about the equipment we need and the method of how you can see each part of the flower.

Lastly we put pollen on a rectangular piece and looked put it on the microscope to get a closer observation

I found this activity fun because when I saw the results at the end it looked like corona virus and I found it interesting

Jealousy

LI: To write an abstract noun senses poem.

An abstract noun is something that can’t be physically touched, as in a feeling (happiness, fear, love, etc) also the 5 senses. This week, LS2 have been learning about Metaphors and Nouns. We got into groups and were introduced  on what is nouns , what we see in the poem ( The Structure) and the 5 senses. Our group created a Metaphor about happiness; Happiness is the blooming rainbow that shines when the sun comes out after the rain. A Metaphor is a comparison of two things without using ‘like’ or ‘as’. We created our own poem as a group about Jealousy.

Main ideas

LI: To identify the main ideas in the text.

For reading, we have been focusing on understanding the important main ideas of the text/video. The video we used for this reading task was about the traditional Maori story about how Maui slowed down the sun and brought more length to our days.

For this task, we watched the video about Maui's traditional Maori story of how he slowed the sun, and identified the main ideas between our group. From those main ideas, we discussed the more important parts of the stories and then identified the three most vital ideas from the story.

I enjoyed this task because I was able to learn more about the traditional Maori stories. Something I found interesting was that Maui was able to slow down the sun because of the pain he caused with his Grandfather's jawbone.

venn diagram

LI: To explain in fewer words what the text is about.

For reading, we have been focusing on comparing text information such as stories, articles and other texts. The text we used for this reading task was the traditional Maori story of how the world came to be. This text was about Papatuanuku and Ranginui waking up from eternal darkness in earth's first light, and Tane Mahuta (one of their children) seperating them to grant his siblings and himself freedom from the darkness. Tawhirimatea was angry at the seperation of his parents.

For this task, we watched a video and read a text based off of the Maori story of how the world came to be (In the Beginning). We labelled the main parts of the video version that are not included in the written version, and labelled the main parts of the written version that were not included in the video. In the middle, we labelled the similarities between the two stories.

I really enjoyed this task and found it easy because I am familiar with identifying the key ideas and comparing the two similar but different texts/information sources.

Creative Writing

LI:  To understand how to use descriptive words to make your writing more interesting.

Our focus for writing this week was to use descriptive writing, which means using words that are powerful, making your text more exciting to read and add more detail into your writing. We were tasked to work collaboratively in pairs to complete this task.

our task was to describe one of the two pictures that we were given. To make this task easier we would use our prior knowledge of sentence structures, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and descriptive words to create a piece of writing that uses descriptive words to make the text exciting to read.

I found this activity fun because I love learning and writing about sea creatures.

Sumarising

LI: To explain in fewer words what the text is about.

For reading, we have been focusing on summarising text information such as stories, articles and other texts.

For this task, we found exactly twenty keywords to build an understanding of the text about. Keywords help us understand more in a short amount of time. Then from those twenty words, we chose six of those words to create a summary on. A summary is a short and brief description of the story so that we can understand the text in fewer words.

I enjoyed this task and found it easy because I am familiar with summarising and understanding texts using the key reading comprehension strategies so I can expand my knowledge of a story.

Cinquain poem

LI: To write a cinquain poem to describe a sports star.

We have been learning to write cinquain poems to help us strengthen our connections to description. A cinquain poem has 5 lines. Each line has a different purpose. Line 1 is a noun which is a name. Line 2 has 2 adjectives taht describe the noun. Line 3 has 3 verbs that end in ‘ing’ and describe the actions. Line 4 is a noun phrase which is a group of words (not a sentence) that go together to describe the noun. Line 5 is a synonym which is a word with a similar meaning to the noun.

I enjoyed this activity because it was fun to write good things about a sports star.

Duffy Assembly

LI: To understand how reading can change one's life.

Today we had Marc from Duffy come and talk to us about the importance of reading and how reading can make a big impact on your life.  Although Marc had some challenges in his life he used reading as a tool to get through the hard times.  Marc believes that there is only CANs and not CAN’Ts.

I found the words that Marc said interesting, sad because he couldnt find a job because of his criminal record

Key Competencies

LI: To compare the Key Competencies we think we will use on camp and the Key Competencies we actually used.

Before we went to camp our challenge was to think about when we might use the Key Competencies as we faced the challenges.  When we came back from camp we looked at this and compared how we thought we would use the Key Competencies and how we actually used them.
I found this activity very interesting because I relised how key competencies helped me during camp.

5 minutes of camp.

LI: to recount a 5 minute snapshot of one experience you had.

The experience of High Beam

I climbed up the ladder step by step.

The ladder moved every step I took.

I stood in shock dripping with sweat hoping I wouldn't fall.

As soon as I reached the top of the beam the inside of me screamed with happiness.

As soon as I reached the top of the beam I was so happy that I made it.

I walked slowly across to the other side feeling a bit scared as well as trying not to look down because I knew it was high up.

I walked quarter of the way feeling the beam shaking and walked a little bit more hearing people below myself supporting and cheering me on as I walked more and more reaching out to the end of the beam.
As I reached to the end of the beam I heard clapping and more cheering I said to myself congrats you made it

Feeling so amazed with what I just achieved I slowly sat on the beam letting my legs dangle towards the ground.

When I touched the ground I saw my teammate walking towards me clapping and smiling.I felt my teammate touch my shoulder and congratulate me.

Addition and Subtration Maths

LI: To find and use the most efficient strategy to answer the question.

This week we were practising our addition and subtraction strategies. We had three levels of questions to choose from and had to decide after reading the questions which level challenged us the most. I have created DLO to show the strategy I used to solve the question I enjoyed answering. Which strategy would you have used?

TEEL Paragraphs

LI: To understand how TEEL paragraphs can help us structure our information and ideas in a paragraph

We use paragraphs in our writing to expand on an idea. In LS2 we use the TEEL acronym (title, elaborate, evidence and link) to help us structure our thinking. The example on my DLO shows what the TEEL acronyms stand for and where in the paragraph it shows the TEEL acronyms.

I enjoyed this activity because it was challenging to explain my learning about what a teel paragraph is.
